- Description: Google says Gemini can convert a photo of a hand-drawn app mock-up into an interactive tool, but no one outside the company has tested it yet.

Google published a feature on November 5, 2026 that lets anyone upload a photo of a hand-drawn sketch and have Gemini turn it into an interactive tool [S¹](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/products/gemini-app/turn-drawings-into-apps-gemini/?ref=notatechguy.com). The claim sits in a grey zone: Google calls them "live apps," but the company's own description points to a preview window inside Gemini, not a standalone application you can ship to users.

**My read:** I'd hold off calling these "apps" in any meaningful sense. Google's blog describes a preview window where you test what Gemini generates, and says nothing about exporting code or deploying outside the Gemini interface. Until someone independent draws a mock-up and shows what actually comes out, this is a marketing demo, not a verified workflow. The detail I'd watch is whether the underlying code is visible and editable, or locked inside Gemini's canvas.

The mechanics are straightforward. You upload a photo of a sketch, an app mock-up, a habit tracker, or a game board to Gemini [S¹](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/products/gemini-app/turn-drawings-into-apps-gemini/?ref=notatechguy.com). Then you select the Canvas tool and type a prompt like "Can you code this app?" Gemini reads the visual and writes the code, which you can test in a preview window [S¹](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/products/gemini-app/turn-drawings-into-apps-gemini/?ref=notatechguy.com). Google says you can then ask Gemini to adjust colours, fonts, or features in real time [S¹](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/products/gemini-app/turn-drawings-into-apps-gemini/?ref=notatechguy.com).

### What "live" actually means here

Google's blog post, the only source for every claim in this story, never mentions exporting or deploying the generated code.

The "live app" is an interactive preview inside Gemini's own interface. Whether the code behind it is accessible, editable, or portable to another platform is not stated. No one outside Google has tested the feature, and Google has not published benchmarks, error rates, or details on which subscription tiers or geographic markets can access it.

Google has been rapidly expanding what the Gemini app can do. The app [added PDF and document editing inside chat](https://www.notatechguy.com/gemini-app-now-edits-pdfs-and-docs-inside-chat/) late last month, and [Gemini 4 Carbon topped a recent AI index](https://www.notatechguy.com/gemini-4-carbon-tops-ai-index-at-59-gated-to-defenders/) just before that. A day before this sketch-to-app launch, an open-source project called [doop released a canvas that lets AI agents design alongside humans](https://www.notatechguy.com/doop-open-source-canvas-lets-ai-agents-design-live-with-humans/). The pattern across all of these is the same: AI tools are racing toward visual, interactive creation, and Google wants that creation to happen inside Gemini.

### Who would try this first

A product manager who sketches wireframes on paper during a meeting could photograph the sketch, upload it to Gemini, and get a clickable prototype before the meeting ends. A teacher who draws a simple quiz game on a whiteboard could turn it into something students tap through. But neither prototype leaves Gemini's preview window, based on everything Google has disclosed.

The feature is live as of November 5, 2026 on the Gemini app, according to Google's blog [S¹](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/products/gemini-app/turn-drawings-into-apps-gemini/?ref=notatechguy.com).

Google has not said when or whether generated apps will be exportable.
