- Description: Google's third AI Quest, Polar Peaks, teaches students aged 11 to 14 about brain mapping by scanning neurons to solve a character's memory loss.

Google launched "Polar Peaks" on 26 October as the third instalment of an AI literacy series that has drawn more than 400,000 completions from students aged 11 to 14 [S¹](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/education/ai-quests-polar-peaks/?ref=notatechguy.com). That completion count is a vendor's own figure, published on a corporate blog with no breakdown of what counts as a finished quest and no third-party audit [S¹](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/education/ai-quests-polar-peaks/?ref=notatechguy.com). The quest folds connectomics — the science of mapping neural networks, into a game where children scan neurons to diagnose a character's memory loss [S¹](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/education/ai-quests-polar-peaks/?ref=notatechguy.com).

**My read:** This is the first educational product I've seen that tries to teach kids the actual workflow of an AI research lab rather than the polished output. Data cleaning and model testing are the unglamorous core of real machine learning work, and putting them into a game for 12-year-olds is either inspired or optimistic. I don't buy the 400,000 completion figure as a measure of genuine engagement yet, because it is self-reported on a corporate blog with no breakdown of what "completed" means. The connectomics framing is clever, but the quest uses a fictional character, not real brain data, so the science is more hook than method.

### Google's earlier quests modelled floods and eye disease

The program was originally announced in September 2025 by Ronit Levavi Morad, a senior director at Google Research, as a joint effort with the Stanford Accelerator for Learning [P³](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/education/ai-quests/?ref=notatechguy.com). The first two quests tackled flood forecasting and eye disease detection, modelled on Google Research's own flood prediction initiative and its diabetic retinopathy screening tool [S¹](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/education/ai-quests-polar-peaks/?ref=notatechguy.com).

Polar Peaks draws from more than ten years of Google's connectomics work, which recently produced a complete map of the fruit fly brain [S¹](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/education/ai-quests-polar-peaks/?ref=notatechguy.com). Google calls this the largest brain map by number of neurons to date, though that superlative has not been independently verified and no error bars or methodology details were published alongside the claim [S¹](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/education/ai-quests-polar-peaks/?ref=notatechguy.com).

In the game, students clean data, test models, and map neurons to work out why the character's memory is failing [S¹](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/education/ai-quests-polar-peaks/?ref=notatechguy.com). On finishing, they hear from two Google researchers who worked on the real fruit fly mapping [S¹](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/education/ai-quests-polar-peaks/?ref=notatechguy.com). The program runs in 10 languages and targets the 11-to-14 bracket, an age group where structured AI literacy programs are scarce [S¹](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/education/ai-quests-polar-peaks/?ref=notatechguy.com).

### Teacher modules ship alongside the student quest

Google is releasing teacher training modules alongside the quest, housed in its AI Educator Series [S¹](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/education/ai-quests-polar-peaks/?ref=notatechguy.com). Modules for the first two quests are available now; the Polar Peaks module arrives next month [S¹](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/education/ai-quests-polar-peaks/?ref=notatechguy.com).

Earlier this year, AI Quests won a 2026 Webby Award for AI Education, Learning and Training, plus Best Global K-12 Learning Solution at the ETIH Innovation Awards [S¹](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/education/ai-quests-polar-peaks/?ref=notatechguy.com). Both awards are listed only on Google's blog, with no independent confirmation from the awarding bodies [S¹](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/education/ai-quests-polar-peaks/?ref=notatechguy.com).

A secondary-school IT teacher who already uses Google's AI Educator Series can start training on the flood and eye-disease quests today, but must wait until next month for the Polar Peaks module that pairs with the brain-mapping game [S¹](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/education/ai-quests-polar-peaks/?ref=notatechguy.com).
