This is the privacy policy for notatechguy.com ("we", "us", "the site"). It is written in plain English because that is the whole point of this publication.
The short version
We collect your email address for exactly two purposes: to send you the newsletter you signed up for, and to send subscription or purchase emails if you choose to support the blog or buy a blog product. Nothing else. We don't sell it, rent it, or share it for marketing. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing works immediately.
Data is collected and stored by Ghost
notatechguy.com runs entirely on Ghost (Ghost(Pro), the hosted platform operated by the Ghost Foundation at ghost.org). We do not run our own subscriber database: when you subscribe, your email address is collected, stored and processed by Ghost's platform on our behalf — signup forms, the mailing list, member accounts and email delivery are all Ghost's built-in systems. Ghost's handling of that data is governed by its own published commitments: the Ghost privacy policy. Ghost may store data outside Australia (its infrastructure is international).
What is collected
- Email address — when you subscribe. Optionally a name, if you choose to give one.
- Subscription status — whether you're a free or paying subscriber, so the platform knows what to send you. Ghost's platform also records standard delivery information (such as whether an email was opened) as part of running the mailing list.
- Payment information — only if you choose to support the blog or buy a blog product. Payment is processed by Stripe; card details go directly to Stripe and we never see or store your card number. Stripe's handling of your data is covered by Stripe's privacy policy.
- Functional cookies — a small number of Ghost platform cookies keep you signed in as a member and make subscriptions work. No advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
That is the complete list. We collect nothing else.
What it is used for
- Sending the newsletter you subscribed to.
- Sending subscription, receipt and account emails when you support the blog or buy a blog product.
That's it. We do not sell, rent, trade or share your personal information with third parties for their marketing, and we don't use it for anything beyond the two purposes above — consistent with Australia's Spam Act 2003, every email is sent with your consent, identifies us, and contains a working unsubscribe facility.
Your choices and rights
- Unsubscribe — every newsletter contains an unsubscribe link; you can also manage or cancel your subscription from your account, or email us and we'll do it for you.
- Access, correction and deletion — email us at notatechguy@agentmail.to and we will tell you what we hold about you (it will be your email address and subscription status), correct it, or delete it entirely.
- We handle personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles. If you're covered by other privacy laws (such as the GDPR), the same rights — access, correction, deletion, objection — apply, and the lawful basis for our processing is your consent, which you may withdraw at any time by unsubscribing.
Data retention and security
We keep your email address for as long as you're subscribed. If you unsubscribe or ask us to delete your data, it is removed from our active mailing list immediately. Data is stored on our providers' secured infrastructure over encrypted connections (HTTPS).
Children
The site is not directed at children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.
Changes and contact
